Snapshots of Japan

も一つ写真 – Tanukikoji, Sapporo

a one-time pleasure quarter

turned shopping haven.

This is Tanukikoji (Badger Alley) shopping arcade, a real gem.  It used to be a part of the city known for illicit pleasures, but now it`s a quarter of shopping pleasures (perhaps for some, still illicit, as shopping can be an illicit pleasure for most).   The reason it`s called Badger Alley is because badgers are known for their nocturnal liveliness, enchantment, and trickery, all regular happenings back in the time when this long mall was known for its illicit pleasures.  The badger is a magical animal in Japan, able to take on human form.

Any thoughts? In haiku form or not?
